DiSCovering Your Unique Combination of POWERS
Life is a question and how we live it is our answer.
What if you were to DiSCover that everything you think you know about yourself is wrong?
How would you feel if you DiSCovered characteristics about yourself which reveal to you, a completely different and much more intriguing person than the one you’ve been living with your entire life?
What possibilities might suddenly become options if you DiSCovered that you truly are fascinating, irresistible and uniquely brilliant and attractive?
Would you be afraid of this version of yourself? Or would you spend every minute of every day getting to know the new YOU?
In her ground-breaking book A Return To Love, author Marianne Williamson paints a picture of YOU in your finest expression and most powerful posture – the YOU operating in the dominion which God authorized.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.’ We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
The Journey To Self-Discovery Begins Here
Have you considered the people that you work with every day?
The way they think about you and others.
How they respond to conflict.
What irritates them.
When they’re most likely to take charge or take flight.
Maybe you’ve talked to them and made suggestions, only to be ignored.
This probably frustrated you… knowing that your advice was the exact solution to their problem.
Perhaps you’ve done the same… disregarding their well intended advice.
The point is, people do what they do, as if hardwired to think, act and feel a certain way.
Your efforts to “fix them” have not worked and will not work.
Because, God didn’t design us to respond to this method of correction.
Instead, He designed us to pay attention to that which is fascinating and irresistible.
What others see you do to transform yourself and get over your stuff is exponentially more effective than your advice alone.
People do, what people see… not what people say.
A Guide To Influencing Behavior
Matthew 7:1-5 (Message translation) commands us:
Don’t pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults— unless, of course, you want the same treatment.
That critical spirit has a way of boomeranging. It’s easy to see a smudge on your neighbor’s face and be oblivious to the ugly sneer on your own.
Do you have the nerve to say, ‘Let me wash your face for you,’ when your own face is distorted by contempt?
It’s this whole traveling road-show mentality all over again, playing a holier-than-thou part instead of just living your part.
Wipe that ugly sneer off your own face, and you might be fit to offer a washcloth to your neighbor.
God made each of us with clear, distinct and at times, seemingly conflicting differences. These differences give each of us value, sensitivity and a Unique Combination of POWERS (UCP). God established this order and structure in each person congruent to the assignment (or problem) He sent you here to solve.
The greatest commandment in the Bible is to love God with your all and love your neighbor as your self (Matthew 22:37-40). The second part (loving your neighbor) is impossible until you complete the first part (love your self).
Self-love means Having a God-perspective of yourself.
When you have God-perspective, you have God’s power, God’s vision and God’s authority.
My pastor taught me that God’s creation responds to God’s voice and everything you need is already a part of your design. The challenge is letting go of the Genesis 3 perspective (misguided curiosity + misperceived inadequacy) and getting back to following God’s plan for your life.
Saying No To What Has Been
Just imagine what might have happened in the garden if Adam said “No” is to Eve’s offer to take of the fruit. More importantly, what could potentially change in your life if you said “No” to the self-limiting thoughts you have about yourself?
…Ideas that limit your potential.
…restrict your creativity.
….prevent you from taking action on the things that fire your soul.
In her poem The Invitation, Oriah Mountain Dreamer reminds us to live an authentic and worthwhile life:
It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.
It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.
